Over a hundred teenagers torched and smashed cars in Downtown Chicago Saturday night, April 15. The rampage supposedly made for social media ended when gunshots were fired.
Two boys aged 16 and 17 suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to a nearby hospital in fair condition. A bystander was also taken to hospital after getting attacked while in the driver seat of his car by rowdy teenagers.
A total of 15 people, nine adults and six children were arrested.
Some teenagers were seen jumping on top of a bus, disrupting the city’s transportation system. Others started a brawl after descending on Millennium Park and attempting to breach barricades. Cars were also left vandalized near East Washington Street, including a Tesla worth around $120,000.
A 16-year-old boy was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, and a firearm was recovered. An adult and a juvenile were also charged with possession of a stolen vehicle. The others were charged for reckless conduct.
The huge gatherings in the street are dubbed “teen trends,” which extends invites to teenagers across the city. The incident occurred a day after another teenage boy, 14, was shot at another gathering near 31st Avenue Beach. A 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection to the shooting.
Authorities were informed about the gathering via Emergency Management and Communications. Some reports said nearly 1,000 teenagers attended the “teen trends” event, but the true number remains unclear.
“It’s heartbreaking, kids fighting, chasing each other, some of them got guns,” an unidentified witness told NBC News. “It’s really heartbreaking when one of them actually gets hurt, and that’s unfortunate.”
The witness added that police stood no chance against the crowd.
“It was a lot of cops here, but they were still outnumbered. There were so many teenagers that showed up, and they tried to keep the peace and keep them under control.”
It’s also possible that the Chicago cops are being too cautious or have become soft.
Just over two years ago, nearly three dozen cold-blooded street gangs reportedly formed a pact to “shoot on-sight any cop that has a weapon drawn on any subject in public.” (Related: Chicago gangs form pact to SHOOT police on sight when cops draws weapons on thugs.)
The “situational information report” from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) dated August 26, 2020, stated: “Members of these gang factions have been actively searching for, and filming, police officers in the performance of their official duties. The purpose of which is to catch on film an officer drawing his/her weapon on any subject and the subsequent ‘shoot on-sight’ of said officer, in order to garner national media attention.”
But outgoing Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot noted that Chicago police leadership has assured her they will “make the necessary adjustments to address these ‘teen trends’ issues as we move into the summer months.”
“As I have said before, we as a city cannot and will not allow any of our public spaces to become a platform for criminal conduct,” Lightfoot said in a statement.
“Most importantly, parents and guardians must know where their children are and be responsible for their actions. Instilling the important values of respect for people and property must begin at home.”
