A recent survey conducted by polling company Rasmussen Reports reveals that 75 percent of Americans fear that the ongoing Israel-Hamas war could lead to a domestic terror attack.
The survey, conducted from Oct. 15 to 17 with 1,014 respondents, found that 75 percent of Americans are “concerned” about a potential terrorist attack in the United States. Forty-three percent of respondents said they were “very concerned” about a terrorist attack, and 22 percent were “not having a concern” about a possible attack.
Moreover, the poll shows that 49 percent of voters think the threat of terrorism has “surged” since President Joe Biden assumed office, compared to the 17 percent that believe the threat of terrorism has decreased under his administration.
“Americans already felt that the threat of terrorism was greater since President Joe Biden took office, but they are now on edge since the Hamas attack on Israel nearly two weeks ago,” wrote Washington Examiner columnist Paul Bedard.
The poll also found that 43 percent of respondents are “very concerned” about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine in the Gaza Strip, compared to just four percent who are not concerned.
The survey also found that Americans are worried about the country’s national security and the president’s plans to resolve the conflict. (Related: Poll: Most voters see Biden as a POOR LEADER who cannot be trusted.)
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray and senior bureau officials have warned that a potential copycat terrorist attack like the one conducted by Hamas at the opening of its conflict with Israel could strike the United States.
“The threat is very much ongoing, and in fact, the threat picture continues to evolve. Here in the U.S., we cannot and do not discount the possibility that Hamas or other foreign terrorist organizations could exploit the conflict to call on their supporters to conduct attacks on our own soil,” Wray stated.
The FBI has been actively working with state and local law enforcement agencies to mitigate the potential threat posed by assailants inspired by Hamas.
Wray also addressed the concerns of threats against both Jewish and Muslim communities in the United States, as well as their institutions and houses of worship. He assured reporters that the FBI is “moving quickly to mitigate” these threats, although senior officials have deemed other threats not to be credible.
Wray pointed out the “increase in reported threats” and specifically warned against “lone actors who may take inspiration from recent events to commit violence of their own.” He urged police chiefs to remain vigilant to detect signs of potential mobilization towards violence. “We will not tolerate violence motivated by hate and extremism.”
The FBI director added that the legal attache office of the FBI in Tel Aviv was actively collaborating with partners in the Israeli government and the U.S. embassy in Israel to locate Americans impacted by the ongoing conflict in the region, including those held hostage by Hamas and others who remain unaccounted for. Victim services specialists are working with victims and their families both domestically and abroad.
